Yolk Moon

The night sky is painted midnight blue
with faint strokes of yellow and white.
The threads of our prairie skin
are being pulled by the land.
My heart is heavy
and you sit beside me
beaming as bright as the moon.
You comfort me with stories
of days gone by,
of the land under your skin.
We are united in our madness,
especially tonight
as we wind down the country roads.
Your laugh is sweeter
on this night
on the dark road.
Your words are
small pillows of comfort
against the vibrations
in my head.
As the road rolls out underneath us
you make sure
I remember to breathe.

It was somewhere between
your laugh or mine
that we saw the moon.
You called it a yolk moon.
It was so large
we thought it would swallow
us whole
and the yellow was so rich
we could take a bite
out of it and taste
the nutrients.
We ran out of the car,
in the middle of the blackest
prairie night.
I think we howled
straight to our sister moon.
We howled and roared,
in unison,
calling out to women everywhere.
Here we are world,
take us just as we are.

You are the one
who has taken me
just as I am.
In all my glory
and all my shame.
You have been my sister in this great adventure.
You will always be my yolk moon.
